    After-Sun Burn Salve

This multi-herb salve is formulated to soothe, cool, and repair sunburned skin using a blend of organic oils, plant infusions, and essential oils known for their anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and skin regenerative properties. Each ingredient is selected for its well-documented therapeutic effects:

    Base Oils and Infusions:

Organic Fractionated Coconut Oil (Cocos nucifera)

Coconut oil has been shown to enhance skin barrier function, reduce water loss, and promote healing due to its emollientand antimicrobial properties. Its medium-chain fatty acids also provide a soothing, non-irritating base for burn-affected skin.
[Evidence: Verallo-Rowell et al., Dermatitis, 2008.]

Lilac (Syringa vulgaris, wild-harvested)Infused in oil

While lilac is less commonly studied, uses support its anti-inflammatory and astringent properties. Anecdotal and ethnobotanical records suggest it can help reduce redness and irritation as well

Organic Plantain (Plantago major)Infused in oil

Rich in allantoin and mucilage, plantain promotes skin regeneration and soothes inflammation. It also exhibits antimicrobial activity, helping prevent secondary infections in compromised skin.
[Evidence: Samuelsen, Journal of Ethnopharmacology, 2000.]

Organic St. John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum)Infused in oil

Topically, St. John’s Wort oil has demonstrated wound-healing and anti-inflammatory effects, in part due to its constituent hyperforin. Studies suggest it may improve epithelial repair.
[Evidence: Süntar et al., Journal of Ethnopharmacology, 2010.]

Organic White Willow Bark (Salix alba)Infused in oil

Contains salicin, a precursor to salicylic acid, with recognized analgesic and anti-inflammatory activity. It can help reduce the burning and pain sensation of sunburn.
[Evidence: Shara & Stohs, Phytotherapy Research, 2015.]

Organic Comfrey (Symphytum officinale)Infused in oil

Comfrey is rich in allantoin, which supports cell proliferation and tissue repair. Studies confirm its effectiveness in wound healing and soothing inflamed skin.
    [Evidence: Staiger, Phytotherapy Research, 2012.]

Organic Witch Hazel (Hamamelis virginiana)Hydrosol or extract

Known for its astringent, anti-inflammatory, and cooling effects, witch hazel reduces swelling and soothes irritation. It is also mildly antimicrobial.
[Evidence: Barrett et al., Journal of Inflammation, 2011.]

    Organic Calendula (Calendula officinalis)Oil infusion

Calendula has been extensively studied for wound healing, anti-inflammatory, and epithelial regeneration benefits. It enhances tissue repair and reduces redness.
[Evidence: Parente et al., Phytotherapy Research, 2012.]

    Essential Oils:

    Lavender Essential Oil (Lavandula angustifolia)

Clinical studies show lavender EO reduces pain and speeds up healing of burns due to its analgesic, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties.
[Evidence: Cavanagh & Wilkinson, Phytotherapy Research, 2002.]

    Pine Essential Oil (Pinus spp.)

Pine oil has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial effects. It may help soothe sun-damaged skin and support cellular protection.
[Evidence: Ryu et al., Journal of Ethnopharmacology, 2010.]

Ylang Ylang Essential Oil (Cananga odorata)

This aromatic oil provides anti-inflammatory and mood-lifting benefits. It also contributes a gentle soothing effect on irritated skin.
[Evidence: Woo et al., International Journal of Molecular Medicine, 2014.]

    Mechanism of Action Summary:

This formulation acts on multiple pathways to address sunburned skin:

    • Anti-inflammatory: via flavonoids, salicylates, and essential oil compounds (e.g., linalool, hyperforin)

    • Skin regeneration: through allantoin-rich herbs like comfrey and plantain

    • Analgesic: willow bark and lavender reduce pain perception

    • Astringent/antimicrobial: witch hazel, calendula, and St. John’s Wort help reduce infection risk
